    I'm always the last one being picked, BJJ or something else, doesn't matter. Don't know why. Had always felt left out since I was a child, so it's not a foreign feeling to me, yet it gives me anxiety. The only time I was first one picked was another girl who thought I was a push over and could teach me stuff. But well, turns out I crushed her by accident, so then she never chose me lol.

    What about private lessons? Can you gain functional self-defense skills by just rolling with an experienced instructor in private? Say 2 or 3 times per week? I see the value in rolling with a lot of people of different ages and skill levels in group classes but the risk vs reward profile of doing that is different for me at 46 years old. It would expose me to a lot of injury risk but for how much extra reward over private lessons? Injuries seem to be caused by 1. rolling with someone who doesn't know what they are doing, 2. rolling with someone who is an overaggressive 20-year-old. Can both of these problems be overcome through private lessons?

    I was just out for 3 weeks, my knee popped out : ). I used to go through those emotions but I've learned to accept it and it allows me to rest. When hurt, I still show up to my academy to watch the drills, it definitely maintains the discipline of time commitment and I get to learn the technique of the day, always learning something or small detail I had missed before. Great message and great vid as always!! Your edits are amazing professor, do you do the editing part or delegate it? Thx.

    Man, I've been doing jiujitsu for four months, and took the opposite approach. I went against the best people, those who nobody else wanted to roll against. I feel like I've gotten way better than I would have, if I only trained with white belts. For the past two months, I've been able to beat all the white belts, and a lot of the blue belts. I've even, in the last two months, scaled back my intensity, to use less strength, and more technique. I easily beat white belts that have been doing this for a year, and they even go hard on me.

    I did my comeback in February. I started my BJJ journey in 2017 November, and I am still a blue belt. I skipped almost two years due to a knee surgery, after the recovery after I felt that it’s simply not worth it at my age… However I do miss the grappling. Now I m over 40 but I attend at least 3 classes per week, however I still afraid to go back to no-gi (where I got my knee wrecked thanks for a wannabe MMA fighter ). It was realy hard to start again. Guys who just started at that time when I got injured now tapped me… well I won’t gonna sugarcoat it: I even got tapped by some talented white belt. It’s an interesting how hard I am trying to defeat my own ego.

    46 2 stripe white belt. I come from Karate, JKD, Silat (80's and 90's)and even Keysi ( 2000's). Did BJJ for two years and want to do Judo, Catch Can and Sambo. Only one I'd stick with at this age is BJJ. To fall is part of getting old. To learn to break fall and fight from the ground is so empowering!

    As with everything in life, it depends. Depends on how you train. Do you train stand up? Do you train punch defense and clinching? Do you even spar? Never training against potential strikes can reinforce dangerous techniques (in a street fight).

    How much more evidence do BJJ guys need on this? Most do this as a hobby, you might lose your job because of injuries , house etc. It hasn't been around that long, but I bet in years to come it's players will all end up as cripples. It can't change as you have to power against joint manipulation, that's why I gave it up.

      RUclips change their policy regarding ads, allowing them to insert as many ads as they want in any given video. Popular videos, now get shown more ads, and not only do we have no control over it, it hasn’t resulted in any increased revenue that I can tell.

    You are absolutely right about trying to keep anyone remotely athletic off the field so they can heal. Other than bumps and bruises I had more injuries playing team sports and powerlifting. 4 knee surgeries, shoulder impingement, tendonitis several times all before 35. About the only real injury (and I'm using the word loosely) were my ribs about 3 months into juijtsu. They took forever to heal because the rib cage gets squished a lot when you first start. I spent most of my time under people when I first started.

    BJJ is not only hard when it comes to injuries, but it’s even harder when you are 50 years old and have an autoimmune disease that is always attacking your joints to one extent or another. Because of this, I don’t roll hard anymore. Most of my rolls are just “flow rolls” and I pick my partners *very* carefully. It’s either that, or just don’t do BJJ.

    • @michaelchen3208
      @michaelchen3208 7 дней назад

      I am going 70 years old in 2 years, I have the same mentality of picking the right partner, rolling technically and artistically. Older age can not afford injuries and stop exercise for long time. Injures will eventually keep older people out of bjj practice!

    I just watched class and rolls yesterday. Pulled a muscle two weeks ago and it's still real sore. I wish I would have participated, though. A technique was covered that I could have done as it didn't involve much use of my injured part. However, I made several notes and learned a few new-to-me details, so I'm really glad I went vs. just staying home. It's also good to see the group. Recently I spent over a month on the sideline with an injury I sustained away from my gym. It's tough missing, but I watched every day that I normally train and learned a lot. Also, as mentioned in this video, my coach sat with me several times and I enjoyed one on one chats that I would not have had otherwise. I agree 100% with the advice to watch class if you can't train.

Mentally pushing through when possible. I eliminate other things as well like the gym if necessary. Just focus purely on technique and Jujitsu. Mental side is everything. I have to fly out for a vacation to Europe in a week, I took it as light as possible, almost did nothing. Now I have had agonizing tendonitis pain in my right foot for the past three days, if this thing doesn't get better in a week, I'm completely screwed. It happens everytime I have closed guard and they get up and I hold the guard. I'm super annoyed, I'm seriously debating quitting BJJ. Blue belt here.

    Great video Rick, I have had a range of serious injuries the past couple of years. I agree with keeping your mind in the game and study class rolls. Visualisation is the 🥇☝🏽 In April I took training in my own hands, before going back to class. I would just drill with a friend who wanted to get back to Jiu Jitsu, once or twice a week. I taught him all of my A-Game and what I was developing for my B and C. I also got to develop a great rear triangle and sneaky arm bar setups over this time. Now I have started to coach kids 2 times a week and back on the mats❤️🙏🏽👊🏽

    The age and weight divisions in competitions are there for a reason. If you are a white belt, just learning to walk the path of BJJ, stay away from young, enthusiastic white belts, especially those that are heavier than you. In BJJ, consistency pays off better than effort. It’s more productive to roll at 50% power every day instead of 100% on and off, taking recovery time in between.

I'm going again to get x-rays, MRI and a CT exam to make sure that I didn't tear my rotator cuff. I don't care what anyone says, but I don't roll hard. I just don't. I don't care if I get to blackbelt. I've been training bjj for about 5 years. I refuse to get injuries these days. I've had a couple of popped ribs, a broken thumb, and some neck stuff. It's been at least a couple of years since I've had any injuries, and I've decided to keep it that way. If there's an explosive, young, strong white belt, I just play defense and try to survive. I work on my judo takedowns, but I don't crazy with them. I'm in my 40s, and there's no reason to get injuries at this stage. I don't want hip replacements, disc replacements, or any of that stuff. I want to remain healthy and strong, and if that means going a bit lighter in my rolls from here on out, so be it.

      Over 45 lightweight brown belt here. You can train everyday injury free by warming up properly, using situational sparring and mixing chill roll with “everyday Porrada” once in a while. Also, TAP EARLY. with that in mind, condition your body with weight training and feed/hydrate it accordingly.
